Low Cost Superconductive Generators for Mass Markets in Wind Energy

Bonn, April 28, 2016 – The ECO 5 Team presented its feasibility study Windspeed. This work received partial funding by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU (German Federal Environmental Foundation). Fundamentally, substantial weight reductions and cost advantages releative to all conventional alternatives were shown. For the Windspeed generator a cost potential of 104 k€/MW, or 136 k€/MNm is expected. While this study is independent of EcoSwing and mainly deals with the medium temeprature superconductor MgB2, you will find that certain engineering aspects also apply to high temperature superconductors.
