Low Cost Superconductive Generators for Mass Markets in Wind Energy

Bonn, April 28, 2016 – The ECO 5 Team presented its feasibility study Windspeed. This work received partial funding by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU (German Federal Environmental Foundation). Fundamentally, substantial weight reductions and cost advantages releative to all conventional alternatives were shown. For the Windspeed generator a cost potential of 104 k€/MW, or 136 k€/MNm is expected. While this study is independent of EcoSwing and mainly deals with the medium temeprature superconductor MgB2, you will find that certain engineering aspects also apply to high temperature superconductors. This study is published in German, and available as public domain (Creative Commons—ShareAlike 3.0 Germany (CC BY-SA 3.0 DE).

Superconducting Generators - A Fresh Breeze in Renewables

DBU-Wiezoreck2016-04-20 Osnabrück, April 20, 2016 – The feasibility and viability of superconductive wind turbine generators was the single topic of this highly focused one-day seminar.

The seminar looked into a broad range of topics from engineering feasibility, over cost comparison, to reliability and supply chain issues. ECO 5 was presented with two talks. One by Dr. J. Wiezoreck, the other by Dr. C. Bührer.

Turbine to get H2020-Backed Superconductive Generator

Envision Energy, a world leading smart energy solution provider, has announced that it aims to install a superconductive generator on one of its most advanced wind turbines. The product named EcoSwing generator is designed for a +3 MW class direct drive turbine and will provide enough electricity to power 1,000 households. The EcoSwing generator is thought to be the first superconductive generator designed for a wind turbine and promises a step change in generator development. The product has received funding from Horizon 2020.
